Lake Ouachita State Park - December 2006

We left Friday at lunch to head out for Lake Ouachita Start Park outside of Hot Springs, AR. I had just picked up my "new to me" hybrid trailer December 9th. It is quite a bit bigger than my little 14 foot pop-up trailer (sold that one - 46 cranks - to a MUCH younger, stronger family). The trailer, "Free Bird" (named by the RV Rental place where I purchased it), is an 18 ft Jayco Jay Feather "hybrid" trailer with pop out ends that make into a queen sized bed on one end and a double bed on the other.
It was a bit more difficult to pull since it was twice as heavy and 3 times as high as the pop-up. But it more than made up for that because it only took us about 30 minutes to completely set up camp...which is much better than it used to be with the pop-up. With the pop-up we were lucky to have it set up after about an hour and a half...plus my back usually hurt after setting up. There isn't much physical labor involved in getting the hybrid set up...no 46 cranks to get the roof up, nor pulling...pulling...and more pulling to get the beds out. To set up the beds on the hybrid, you just loosen two handles on each bed, let the bed platform down and put the support poles in...super easy... :-)

This is the second year that we have been to Lake Ouachita for their Eagle Watch. Last year we saw a lot of eagles. This year we only saw three eagles and they were really too far away to take good pictures of. I hope that Lake DeGray has more eagles when we go up there the end of January.
It rained all night Friday night, and it was cold, plus the wind blew pretty hard all day Saturday. So, I did not get to go out in the kayak at all. When we went on the boat ride to see the eagles the ranger said that the water temperature was 56 degrees. I would not have wanted to capsize in that! While I was on the point Saturday evening taking pictures of the sunset, I heard someone on the water scream and say something about it being very cold...I found the source of the scream...it was some guy who had jumped into the water behind a speedboat to go skiing! I watched as he got up on the skies and went off into the sunset. He at least had on half of a wetsuit with short pants and short sleeved top. I would say he needed a full wetsuit for that water!
The sunset was beautiful...I just wish that I had been out in the kayak to take advantage of some gorgeous mountain scenery.I got my "tacky" lights put up during the day Saturday so I could take a night picture.
Sunday turned out to be a nice day and we sat around outside quite a bit just enjoying the campsite. We had full hook-ups in campground A, so I had my first experience with the sewer hookups...quite easy and painless. I thought it was going to be yucky, but it wasn't.

As we were outside sitting we enjoyed the birds that came by to visit. We had a flock of yellow birds come by to see what food they could find. Someone said that this is a pine warbler. It is cute!

And we had a trio of pileated woodpeckers hunting and pecking on the pine trees around the site.

I got Mom and Dad to sit down for some pictures before we left.

So after lunch Sunday we packed up and headed back to Shreveport.
We made much better time on the way back because we went directly through Hot Springs instead of bypassing it like we did on the way up (I was scared of the traffic towing the trailer). I'm glad that we got the trailer. It will make camping a joy again, and I will still feel like I'm tent camping since it has the tent ends.

I do have a few more pictures that I did not put in the blog on my webshots page. Click here if you want to check them out.

So it will be Christmas soon and I am looking forward to seeing Jim and Ann and Jessica home for Christmas.
So, 'til next time...
Merry Christmas - Cathy

Miami - November 06

Mom, Dad, and I flew down to Miami to see Jim and Ann. It was Dad's first time to fly. I was a bit worried that with his ear problems that he would not like it, but he loved it. As we were taking off from Dallas, he watched intently out the window and you should have seen the smile that he had on his face as the plane took off and headed up to 39,000 ft. It was a smile of wonder and amazement that I don't think I've ever seen. Ann and Jim...thanks for putting it there...

Dad watched intently out the window as we got over the ocean. And we saw the Everglades as we started descending into Miami. We got in to the Miami airport around 11 AM their time and our adventure began.

Ann and Jim's house is gorgeous and the back yard is full of tropical trees and flowers that Jim has planted. The bougainvillea in their back and side yard give it a real tropical feel. I took so many pictures while I was there that I put them on my webshots page. So you can see pictures that I took by clicking here to go to that album. I won't put many of them here since I have them there.

Ann and Jim had our days all planned out so we could make the most of our time there. Saturday we drove to the Fairchild gardens. We wandered through the gardens and saw some beautiful flowers. I did not have my good Nikon macro lens with me since it is still at Nikon getting fixed after it's accidental dunking at Lake Catherine. So I did not do much closeup photography. I think my favorite flower picture is of this very unusual flower that we saw climbing up a building at Fairchild Gardens.
After we left Fairchild we went to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens that was built by the agricultural industrialist James Deering. It was more like a castle than a home and it reminded me a lot of the Hearst Castle. It had pools and gardens surrounding it that were beautiful. While we were there photographers taking pictures of the young Mexican girls who were in long white gowns dressed up to celebrate their 16th birthday. The surrounding garden/pools area was very restful and we enjoyed our walk through it.
Sunday morning we got packed up and got the 3 kayaks loaded and we headed out for our visit to the Keys with a side trip as we drove down to the Everglades. I got more pictures of birds in the Everglades than I have ever gotten. The birds just acted like we were not even there as we walked the mile pathway through the glades. The path is a wooden raised walkway above the glades so you are not walking on the ground at all. Thank goodness...I really would not have like to be food for those gators.
My favorite picture is of the green heron. I have never seen a green heron that was really green. We saw some that were iridescent green...so pretty.
And, I have never noticed how birds can look down at the same time they look out. Weird... They must have close to 360 degrees of vision.
We left there and headed down to Islamorada in the Keys where we stayed until Tuesday. We got there, got unpacked, got the kayaks down and headed out. Ann, Jim and I kayaked out to some buoys about a mile and a half out in the Atlantic.
Jim did some snorkeling there, but I was not sure of my ability to get back on the SOT in deep water, so I just stayed in the yak and just looked as did Ann. I had never paddled a SOT before, and it was quite different than my sit inside yak. You sit much higher in it than you do in mine.

We saw Manta Rays jumping out of the water and flying fish while kayaking. Jim and Ann posed for a picture before going back to shore.
After a while, we headed back to the hotel so we could get some supper. Jim cooked most of the time and he is a really good cook! And he cooks healthfully so, thank goodness I did not gain any weight while down there.

Monday, Jim rented a 24 ft party barge and we all went out for a half a day. First we went out to the beacon which you can see at night as it's light rotates around for the ships to navigate through the area. When we got there Ann, Jim and I put our snorkel gear on and went snorkeling around the coral reef and the bottom of the beacon.
The water was beautiful aquamarine and the visibility was incredible. I wish that I had bought an underwater camera. There were more fish there than I saw in the Bahamas when I did my one and only scuba dive. We saw parrot fish, yellow fins, manta rays, a moray eel, two nurse sharks, barracudas, and lots more that I don't know the names of. It was just incredible! That was THE BEST TIME that I have ever had snorkeling. And with my lasik working ok now, I was able to see great underwater. While we snorkeled Dad did some fishing, but he didn't catch anything and Mom sat and enjoyed relaxing in the shade of the boat awning.
Dad got to sit in the captains seat as Jim took up the anchor We headed toward the seven mile bridge further south in the Keys. We tooled around some then headed back in to clean up and do a little shopping for supper.
That afternoon while standing out in the pier area, we looked up and to our amazement saw a perfect hole in the clouds. It looked really weird. It was just a circle punched out in the clouds and you could see blue sky through it. Really weird...
That night Ann and Jim took the flashlight and went to the dock area to see what they could find. They found a beautiful red crab who was resting a a rocky crevice right where we put the yaks in.
Ann spotted a Moray eel close by the crab. He wasn't as big as the one we saw under the beacon, but I was able to get a picture of this one by using the manual focus ring on my camera...even if it is a bit blurry...
The next morning we all got up early so we could see the sunrise...which turned out was behind a bank of clouds...so there wasn't one. But Ann wanted to go fishing and when she got out the shrimp to use a bait, an egret decided it needed some too. It stayed there for the longest. Jim finally fed it some shrimp and I got a picture of it as it caught one of the shrimp. Then it flew off a distance to eat it.
We left after getting all packed up and went to Long Key to eat lunch sandwiches and to have a nice milk shake from the gift shop there. Then we went on a short hike out to the end of a bridge over the confluence of the Atlantic and Gulf. From the bridge we saw several sharks as they came through the area. We also saw a huge sea turtle and an Eagle Ray as they cruised under the bridge. The pictures that I took of those are on the webshots album. While we were on the bridge I got a picture of Jim, Ann, Mom and Dad that I really like. Dad was wearing his new shirt that Jim had bought him.
Then we went on down to Bahia Honda. The beach there was beautiful and the water was a gorgeous aquamarine. We got the kayaks out, and I went out for a while alone. Jim taught Dad how to snorkel and they did that for a while. Ann joined me to kayak around the island, but we didn't quite make it before we felt we need to go back. While we were out, Jim got Dad on his kayak, I was happy to see it. I know he was disappointed when he could not balance enough to get in my sit in kayak. He looked like he was really enjoying it. I guess he was remembering the good days when he used to go out on his pirougue.
Ann, Dad, and I got together so Jim could take a picture of us.

After having lots of fun there, we packed up and went to eat at a place on the water. Then we headed back to Coral Gables to clean up and get ready for our trip home the next afternoon.

Wednesday morning Jim said we had to make one more trip to the ocean, so he took us down to Virginia Key. Ann and I got the kayaks out for a while. It was very windy and choppy that day, so Jim let me use his 17 ft Ocean Prowler. That Prowler was much easier to use than the Perception Koho. It cut through those waves easily and was a dream to paddle. It was kind of neat to be out in the bay so close to the Miami skyline that I always see in CSI Miami.
After a while it was time to head back to their house to clean up and get ready for our flight back to Dallas. I hated to leave, but I know vacations can't last forever...just wish they did...

Ann and Jim did a wonderful job of giving us a trip to remember for the rest of our lives. And I just cannot tell them enough how much I really appreciate all that they did for us.

Lake Catherine State Park - Oct 2006

Mom, Dad and I went to Lake Catherine last weekend. It was beautiful. We were about a week shy of having peak fall color, but it was still gorgeous. We had a rocky start to the trip with a blowout on the trailer. We were around the pastures of Mooringsport when it happened. I found out that my car jack just won't work very well on a slope. I have AAA, but took a chance on flagging a passing truck down. It turned out that the guys worked for the gas company and were on their way home to Oklahoma from south LA. They were quite nice, got the trailer jacked up and the new tire put on within 45 minutes. So, we got packed back up and headed on to the lake.

Saturday morning we went into Hot Springs hoping to find a tire. We looked for about 3 hours and nobody had that size tire. We gave up and went back to camp. I got the kayak rigged and went out on the lake for about three hours. It was a great afternoon to be out on the lake. A cool breeze blew out of the northeast and the sky was such a beautiful blue. I took lots of pictures, and I put the photos that I took in my webshots album. So I will only post a few here.

The lake was beautifully decked in reds, yellows and greens. I really think that Lake Catherine has some of the prettiest display of fall color in the region.
There were lots of ducks and geese. I didn't see but three blue herons while there. I did get a nice picture of a blue hiding from me in a tree.
The sides of the lake had lots of turtles laying around. You can see this was an area that was "Turtle City"! I don't think I have ever seen so many turtles in one place ever!
A little further down I went into a cove where I saw a really big turtle with several smaller ones. And then another turtle pulled up on the branch and they way they were looking at each other make it seem as if these guys were going to come to blows! After getting back from my paddle, we went up to buy some firewood. I got the yellow pages out and made a list of numbers of tire places in the region. I got a wrecking/tire company in Malvern on the second try and they had the correct tire for my popup. That was a relief...I would not have liked driving all the way back to Shreveport without a spare.

Sunday morning when we awoke, the world was in a fog. Everything was white. It made for some nice picture taking, so I have lots of them on my webshots page.
I just happened to catch the boy fishing as the fog was lifting out on the lake. The picture below is a panoramic that I made by stitching two pictures together. I think it is one of my favorite pictures from the trip.
Sunday after going to get the spare replaced, I was able to get out paddling before we left. I found this goose who was taking his bath.
He was enjoying his bath but when I got too close he started posturing... making sure that I knew he was boss I suppose... I love how the white goose appears to be bowing before the boss! And look how he is eyeing me...
I left the geese and paddled back to the waterfall. I was walking up to take a last picture of the falls when whoops...my foot slips and I go down into the water...camera and all. Needless to say that kind of put a damper on things. I think the Nikkor 28-105 macro lens is ruined. I'm not sure if anyone can take it apart to dry it out or not, but it filled with water. So I will probably have to replace it. The D70 body got wet too, but I have insurance on it through 2007, so I hope that it can be fixed. I thought I would give it a week or so to dry out and give it a try before I take it in. What a bad time to mess my camera up! Now I'll probably have to go to Miami in a week and a half with just the Canon. Oh well...I'll have to borrow Jim's camera every now and then...ok brother???

Well, it's late and I'd best get some sleep. The next report will be after we get back from Miami November the 15th. Looking forward to seeing my brother Jim and Ann his wife and visiting the keys for the first time.

Remember if you want to check out more of my pictures from Lake Catherine, go to my Webshots album!

'til then...Happy Kayaking,
Cathy

Daisy State Park - Lake Greeson - Oct 14

Missy, Little Bit and I went to Daisy State Park on Lake Greeson Friday evening. It was dark when I got to the campsite so it was not too fun backing in to this spot on the hill. Needless to say, I got out and checked to make sure I was backing up ok many times. It took me about an hour to set up camp by myself. But I managed to get everything set up and did not even hurt my back.

Saturday was a beautiful day and I asked my neighbor across the drive to help me take my kayak down to the water. There was no way for me to take it myself since the water was very low and there was a precipitous 2-5 ft drop to the beach from the hill. So after my nice neighbor came by and helped me to bring my kayak down to the lake, we went kayaking.

It was Missy's second time to be out in the kayak and she was quite active. She would go from one side to the other looking at things on the shore. And when all 24 lbs of her little body went from one side to the other...I had to make sure to lean to the opposite side. She can certainly cause the kayak to roll a bit!

But she had a good time, I think...at least she looks like she's having fun... I decided to go across from the campsite to a fairly large cove and when I got into the cove...

I saw a flash of large wings and...

An eagle swooped out of the trees and circled in front of us.

His mate was in a tree on the right side of the cove and off they flew. They were never close enough to get a picture of both of them at one time. Quite an exciting thing to see. And because I had both dogs in the boat, I had not brought my good camera with me...so I guess I was lucky to get pictures at all with Mike's little A85 Canon. It doesn't have a good telephoto lens. But with both dogs in the kayak, I did not want to carry an expensive camera, so I made do with his...

After they disappeared from sight, we meandered down the Lake. I guess Little Bit got tired. He curled up in the front of the kayak and went to sleep while Missy kept guard.

After about an hour and a half, I found an island. So, I landed and let them have a run about for a bit. They had lots of fun smelling all of the new smells. On the mainland across from where we were I saw a flock of geese. They were having fun posturing. We got in the boat and headed closer so I could take a picture, but they decided to take flight. Missy and Little Bit really liked that part.

And even though this picture is blurry...I still like it, so I am putting in the blog anyway...

I decided to head back to camp after that. As I paddled back, I thought it was cute how they rested their heads on the boat...like they were too tired to even hold them up... LOL.

Little Bit looks like he is ready to abandon ship here as we see our only blue heron.

After we got back to camp I put Missy and Little Bit in the trailer. Little Bit kept his eyes on me.

As did Missy...

I decided that it was a good time to take a short nap, so we curled up in the trailer and snoozed for a while. After I woke up, we went for a nice long walk on the shoreline. As the sun was getting that afternoon reddish glow, you could see the autumn colors coming out in the trees across from one of the coves.

It was a nice relaxing trip for me. I did not really eat meals on time, read a lot and hiked quite a bit. I was not certain that I would like camping alone, but with the dogs to keep me company, it was ok. Not something I want to do all the time though... I really prefer having conversations with those who can talk back...

Well, until next time... Happy kayking.
